"Interpretations of Nature: Muci Clemens, Darlene Davis and Eduardo" at Gallery 14

Muci Clemens, a painter and client of Still River Editions who lives in Madison, Connecticut is featured in the group exhibition "Interpretations of Nature: Paintings by Muci Clemens and  Wood Kinetic Sculpture by  Darlene Davis and Eduardo" at Gallery 14, Vero Beach Florida from February 1 through 24, 2017. 

From the press release: 
"This imaginative group of artists come together to give us both abstracted and realistic/impressionistic interpretations of our natural surroundings. The show will take place Tuesday February 1 through Friday February 24 with a reception on Friday February 3 from 5-8pm as part of the Downtown Gallery Stroll. Muci's work focuses on light, while employing a colorful palette that is influenced by the renewal of nature, travels and life around her. According to the artist, 'I create works that make me feel good, whether the pleasure of flowers on a summer day, the nostalgia of old machinery, or the character of a face. I like to think of my art as thought provoking, uplifting, and filled with memory triggers.'

Father and daughter team Darlene and Eduardo's lyrical dancing sculptures appeal to their artistic interests: 'Wood was very likely the first sculptural material used by man, and the spiral is an ancient art motif. The kinetic arm in our pieces is perfectly balanced on a single ball bearing, rotating with the grace of a ballerina. We find that the spirals, creating varying shapes, have a calming effect on people. As they slowly revolve, we are reminded that there is a continuum with a beginning, a middle and an end and a chance to begin again.'"

IMAGES 2012 - Shoreline Arts Alliance - Shona Curtis wins First Honors

Photographers Shona Curtis, David Blackett and Alegre Poniros were among those juried into IMAGES 2012, 31st Annual Photography Exhibition, Shoreline Arts Alliance at Guilford Art Center, 411 Church St, Guilford, CT. The exhibit runs from April 1 - April 21, 2012. There was an opening reception and awards ceremony on Saturday, March 31, 2012.

Congratulations to Shona Curtis who won a First Honors portfolio award for her three intimate black and white images of her father.

Other First Honors recipients are: Miela Barocas Mayer - Guilford, David Gillich - Milford, Dianne Thouin - Old Saybrook. Honorable Mention Recipients are: Sara Augenbraun - Wilton, Liz Calvi - West Hartford, Peter Cooperman - Avon, Kathryn Frederick - Killingworth, Jill Grossman - Chester, Jerry Reed - Essex, Dana Osborn - Middlebury and David Ottenstein-New Haven. The Ann Christensen Award winner is Jackie Heithchue-Madison.

IMAGES 2012 was juried by Jill Enfield, Lance Keimig and John Stanley. The complete list of selected photographers is available here in a pdf.

At the close of the show some of the images will be reinstalled at CT Hospice in Branford.

"Atmospheres" at Koenig FrameWorks / HVCA Accessible Art

"Atmospheres" is a two-artist show that features etchings by DeAnn Prosia and oil paintings by Joanne Conant. The exhibit opens March 23, 2012 at Koenig FrameWorks, 97 South Main St. (Route 25) Newtown, CT. There is an opening reception on Friday, March 23 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. and the exhibit runs until April 28.

The exhibit is part of Housatonic Valley Cultural Alliance's 2012 Accessible Art Project.

Jim Felice's Hatchet Job, and Open Studio

The front of Jim Felice's exhibition announcement card features a hatchet. The back of the card reads: "My studio practice is based on four words: question, seek, discover and investigate.

In asking a question, one seeks an answer that leads to discovery, which demands further investigation in which asks more questions; and the process repeats itself over and over again.

And one day I asked, 'What would it look like if an axe went through it.'"

If that doesn't intrigue you, I don't know what will.

Jim Felice is a sculptor, painter, restorer and musician. His show is at the Upstairs Gallery at Molten Java, 213 Greenwood Avenue, Bethel, CT, from March 5, 2012 - April 13, 2012.

Banjie Getsinger Nicholas: Silver Linings

"Silver Linings: Literal/Metaphorical" is a new show of egg tempera paintings and silverpoint drawings by Banjie Getsinger Nicholas from Whitson Gallery & The Brick Wall Exhibition Space at UCONN Torrington, Feb. 27 - May 11, 2012. Nicholas is an accomplished artist and teacher who works with remarkable materials and subject matter.

From the gallery website:
"The mediums used by artist Banjie Getsinger Nicholas, egg tempera and silverpoint, are two of the oldest mediums used by artists through the centuries. [...] These materials are little changed from those used by the old masters centuries ago. Banjie says, “Their ‘organic’ nature adds to the pleasure of the process for me. Through these paintings and drawings I maintain my personal connection to the natural world and hope some of the reverence I feel will connect with viewers of the work.”

There is an artist's talk and reception on Thursday March 1, 2012 - 7 - 8:30 pm.

Nicholas has recently written an instruction book on silverpoint drawing that was published in February, 2012.

Tony Donovan Featured in "On The Street," Vermont Center for Photography

Tony Donovan of Ivoryton Studio is featured in the Vermont Center for Photography's exhibition of street photography titled "On the Street" from March 2 to March 31, 2012.

Donovan has two photographs in the show, "Informers Beware" and "Commuters," both of which were printed by Still River Editions. Both images are from his Irish series, taken in the early 1970s during a time of great upheaval for Ireland. There is more information in an earlier blog post here about a prior exhibition of some images from the series.

There is an opening reception on Friday, March 2 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m during Brattleboro's Gallery Walk.  Vermont Center for Photography is located at 49 Flat St., Brattleboro, VT.

Keith Johnson in group exhibition "Stone Work" curated by Stephen Vincent Kobasa

The group exhibition Stone Work: Artists' Encounters with Hard Places is on view at the the Institute Library, 847 Chapel St., New Haven, CT from February 11 through March 10, 2012. There is a greeting of the artists on Saturday, February 11, from noon until 2 p.m.

Photographer client Keith Johnson is featured in the exhibition. The artists are: Marion Belanger, Frank Bruckmann, Daniel Buttrey, Anne Doris-Eisner, Emilia Dubicki, Keith Johnson, Constance LaPalombara, Roy Money, Kerry O'Grady, Matthew Weber.

The exhibition was curated by Stephen Vincent Kobasa.

"Stone Soup" at Koenig FrameWorks in partnership with HVCA

"Stone Soup" featuring artists Judith Secco, Mally DeSomma and Thomas Nackid will be on exhibit at Koenig FrameWorks in Newtown, CT from February 10 through March 19, 2012. The exhibition is a partnership with Housatonic Valley Cultural Alliance's Accessible Art Project.

The exhibit is called "Stone Soup" in a reference to the folk story of the same name, with the artists' different talents becoming more than the sum of their parts when put together. The artists' mediums are as follows: Judith Secco, photography; Mally DeSomma, painting; Thomas Nackid, painting/illustration.

There will be an opening reception on Friday, February 10, 2012 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Koenig FrameWorks is located at 97 South Main St., Newtown, CT.

Marko Susla in "Searching for the Perfect Storm"

Marko Susla is among the finalists whose work is being exhibited in "Searching for the Perfect Storm", a storm-themed juried group photography exhibition at Method Art, Scottsdale, AZ. The exhibit began on January 3, and is on view until February 25, 2012.

“Marko Susla pursued independent study in photography and is currently under the mentorship of a fine art professional. His current interests are disparate, ranging from the beauty of scenic and landscape photography, the dark side of documenting abandoned structures and places, and, most recently, the beauty and drama of nocturnal photography. Perhaps what seems disparate is actually a balance.

Marko Susla's work has been shown in a number of exhibitions around the United States, including: Vermont Photography Workplace in Middlebury, Vermont; The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado; Presidio of San Francisco and New Orleans. Ben Larrabee's "Ships Inn" at Rowayton Arts Center

Photographer Ben Larrabee's intimate black and white portrait of his wife and muse Trudie Larrabee was accepted into the juried show "Expressions" at Rowayton Arts Center. The show is on display from February 5 through February 26, 2012 at Rowayton Arts Center, 145 Rowayton Ave., Rowayton, CT.

Ships Inn, 2011

When Trudie and I went to Nantucket last summer for our two weeks of shooting, we spent the first day at Ships Inn before our rental was available.

We discovered that the first day had to be a transition day.

It became a day to shift our energy, tune into each other, allowing time to reorient and connect. We had no agenda, no place to go, nothing to do.

As I looked at Trudie I began to “see” her sitting in the window in a moment of reflection as she wrote down her thoughts about being a muse and our life together. I was inspired to photograph this moment in our lives. A moment that becomes one of the many in the body of work that shows our life together.

I love the layers; foreground, middleground and background, Trudie’s shape, the patterns and textures of the cushion, wallpaper and leaves outside."

ART/BPT/2012: ALL PHOTOS at City Lights Gallery

"ART/BPT/2012: ALL PHOTOS" is a Bridgeport-themed photography exhibition on view from January 12 - February 12, 2012 at City Lights Gallery in Bridgeport. The show features the photographers Michele Beaulieu, Pete Finch, Jay Misencik, Peter Tepper, Yolanda Vasquez Petrocelli, and Yves Francois Wilson.

There is a nice piece by Phillis A. S. Boros in the Connecticut Post, "Photographers capture Bridgeport's diversity -- past, present". It features a slideshow of images by the photographers.

Jay Misencik is a client of Still River Editions. Included in the exhibit are environmental portraits from his "Main Street" Bridgeport series.

There is an opening reception on Thursday, January 19, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. There will also be a special "Art and Chili Buffet" with an artists' talk on Sunday, February 5 from 3 - 5:30 p.m. (suggested donation $10.)

Katonah Museum of Art: Art to the Point

Still River Editions' co-owner and Master Printmaker Mark Savoia, is among the artists chosen for the Katonah Museum of Art's Tri-State Juried Exhibition "Art to the Point".  The show was juried by Donald Sultan, painter, printmaker and sculptor.

There is an opening reception on Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 5 - 7 p.m. The Katonah Museum is located at 134 Jay St. (Route 22), Katonah, NY.

The exhibit will be open from Sunday, January 15 until Sunday, February 19, 2012.

Michele Muir: "Every 69 Seconds..." at Brother Chapman Gallery, New Rochelle

Michele Muir's moving black and white photo-essay about Alzheimer's disease, "Every 69 Seconds..." is on exhibit at Brother Chapman Gallery, Iona College Arts Center, 715 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY from November 1 to December 1, 2011.

There is an opening reception Sunday, November 6, 1 - 3 p.m. There will be a special viewing on Thursday, November 10, at 6:30 p.m. presenting the film "I Remember Better When I Paint" with filmmaker Berna Huebner.

November is National Alzheimer's Awareness Month, and Muir's photographs highlight with great compassion many facets of the lives of those living with the disease. The title of the show refers to the statistic that in the United States every 69 seconds, another person is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

In addition to being an exhibiting photographer, Muir is Director of Communications and Public Policy of The Alzheimer's Association, Poughkeepsie, NY.

Leslie Hudson-Tolles in Cauble Creek Vineyard Artist Invitational, Salisbury, North Carolina

Leslie Hudson-Tolles is featured in the Cauble Creek Vineyard Artist Invitational taking place November 4 - 20, 2011. There will be an artists' reception on Sunday, November 6 at 3 pm. Cauble Creek Vineyard is located at 700 Cauble Farm Rd., Salisbury, North Carolina.

The exhibition features 22 artists local to the winery.

Hudson-Tolles was a longtime Connecticut resident and arts educator. She relocated to North Carolina several years ago where she continues to teach and make new work in colored pencil, graphite and pastels.

Faith Stewart-Gordon at the Silo, New Milford

Faith Stewart-Gordon's acrylic paintings are on exhibit at the Silo at Hunt Hill Farm, 44 Upland Rd., New Milford in a solo show "Interiors and Exteriors, From the Past to the Present" until Nov. 6, 2011. There will be an opening reception with refreshments provided by the Silo Cooking School on Friday, October 21, 2011 from 5-8 p.m.

Stewart-Gordon's paintings are influenced by her travels around the world. In 2010, she was featured in a solo show in Campania in Italy. Her paintings are intimate in scale and tenderly reflect what she finds most beautiful and unusual in her travels.

Stewart-Gordon began her artistic studies before becoming an actor, and then later a notable restaurateur and author. The Connecticut Post has an article on Stewart-Gordon, and the show here.

There will be an artist's talk on Sunday, November 6, at 2 p.m.

Karen V. Neems: Off the Grid

Photographer and digital mixed media artist Karen V. Neems is featured in a solo exhibition, "Off the Grid: Recent Photocollages and Mixed Media", from August 30 - September 17, 2011 at Mamaroneck Artist's Guild. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, September 10, from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

"In the current exhibition, Karen V. Neems explores the concept of the grid in various dimensions, ranging from the strictly formal sense to that of a psychological barrier, either protecting or confining.  The compositions are layered, merged and repeated; the grids conceal and simultaneously reveal. The elements have a certain familiarity, but the space remains a mystery, creating a visual puzzle."

SCRAWL Collaborative Drawing Show Closing Party in New Haven March 25, 2011

Zachary Keeting, our friend with whom we shared a studio at City Wide Open Studios last year, sent out a notice about the closing party and "Big Reveal" for SCRAWL Friday, March 25, 2011 at Artspace New Haven.

Over the last month and a half, SCRAWL brought individual artists and teams of artists into Artspace New Haven to draw on its gallery walls in a huge game of exquisite corpse. Each drawing was connected to the next without the artists being able to see each other's content. Keeting was part of a team called "The Futurists" along with other artists associated with New Haven's Educational Center for the Arts. Friday will be the first time participants and viewers can see the work in its entirety.

Closing party and "reveal" is this Friday, March 25, 2011 from 6-8 pm at Artspace New Haven, 50 Orange St., New Haven, CT. The reception is free and open to the public. There is a VIP cocktail hour from 5-6, and admission to that portion of the evening's events is $10.

Ruth Newquist in "Investigation, Imagination" at the Bruce S. Kersher Gallery

The Bruce S. Kershner Gallery in the Fairfield Library is host to a three-artist exhibition that opened January 9, 2011 and will run until February 27, 2011 during regular library hours. The exhibit, titled "Investigation, Imagination," features watercolorist (and client) Ruth Newquist, painter Duvian Montoya, and sculptor Roe Halper.


Newquist's watercolors are photographic, but not rigidly so. Her paintings, whether New York street scenes, or snow-covered New England houses, seem illuminated from within. From her website: "Sunlight is the focus of my paintings. I am drawn to make a painting when  I see dappled light or interesting shadows falling on historic New England buildings or barns." Many of her cityscapes capture the feeling and light of walking around New York City on a gloriously sunny day, of looking at the architecture and people.

Newquist is a member of several prestigious arts organizations, including National Watercolor Society, Connecticut Watercolor Society, the Salmagundi Club, and Allied Artists of America.

The opening has already happened, but on Thursday February 3, at 2 pm there will be a "Walk and Talk" with the artists. The Fairfield Library is located at 1080 Old Post Rd., Fairfield, CT

New Takes on Portraiture - Thilo Hoffmann and more opening at The Aldrich Museum, January 30, 2011

Figurative work is back in style, as evidenced by the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum's Portraiture exhibition.

Still River Editions made the large-scale digital giclee prints of Swiss artist Thilo Hoffmann's work for this exhibition. Hoffmann works in collaboration with his subjects to create unique environmental photographic statements. His series "High School Portraits" puts much of the creative direction in the hands of those pictured in them. 

Also showing: Shimon Attie: MetroPAL.IS., James Esber: Your Name Here, Hope Gangloff: Love Letters, Timothy White: Portraits, and Jenny Debnau: Head On.

The opening reception and opportunity to meet the artists takes place on Sunday, Jan. 30 from 3:30-5:30 pm. The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is located at 258 Main St., Ridgefield, CT.
